A Country Auction

Last Saturday, Hub and I didn't have anything we had to do, so we decided to spend the day at an estate auction that wasn't too far from where we live. It was a beautiful day, and lots of people were out.   Some were looking for antiques, some wanted farm equipment, and some were looking for bargains. There were lots of books,   lots of good books, but my bookshelves are full.   Sigh .  Moving on. I have a set of china like this, so I thought I might buy these to add to it.  Nope.  Someone wanted it worse than I did. These sales always remind me that someday, strangers may be looking and touching all the treasures that we have now.  In the last few years, I have decreased the amount of goodies I had in storage in the basement, but it would still be a challenge for my family if Hub and I died suddenly. It is hard to get rid of things that give us comfort, like books and pottery and quilt...

Quilt Cabinet

I bought this old cabinet at an auction more years ago than I can remember.  I used it to store quilts in the house we lived in before we moved here in 2002.  It has been in the garage since we have lived here, full of old paint cans and spiders. Hub cleaned out the garage this summer, and cleaned up and repaired the cabinet.  Inspired by the folks at  Furniture Flips , he searched the internet for different ways to paint. He used a crackle technique that involved Plaster of Paris and school glue.  You'll have to talk to him if you want specific instructions. Here it is now; in the corner of our living room with a few quilts inside. I'm really sorry I sold a bunch of old furniture at a yard sale. Hub could have redone it all.  I'm guessing I'll have to find some more at auctions.

Snuff glasses

Last Thursday night, Hub and I went to the Bailey Auction House auction on Chisholm Road north of Florence. I was able to buy these eleven snuff glasses for $4.  SCORE!!! I buy these old glasses just about every time they are offered at auction.  We love to use them for drinking glasses, and so do lots of other people we know.  There are some lead crystal drinking glasses in our kitchen cabinet, but I always get the snuff glass.  In the box of glasses we bought last week, we found this little tin, almost full of snuff.  Hub said we could keep it to use on insect bites.  Grandma kept a little can like this in her apron pocket, and refilled it regularly with snuff from the 8-ounce glass. This can is not too old, because it has a UPC code and a warning. Tooth loss? Gum disease? My toothless grandmother told us she started dipping snuff when she was six years old.  Her teeth were long gone before I was born, and her tongue and gums we...
