Makena State Park, Maui

Makena State Park on Maui has beautiful white sand beaches, backed by a dormant volcanic cinder cone. The water was clean but cold, very different from the Gulf water that we are used to. Makena Beach was once a popular nudist beach, but popularity has decreased dramatically since everyone owns a cell phone with video now.  All beach visitors were properly clothed the day we were there. Chickens run wild in the park; I'm guessing there are no coyotes or foxes on the island.

Jerry Brown Arts Festival

Last Saturday, we drove to Hamilton for the Jerry Brown Arts Festival. There was a huge crowd and we had to park a long way from the building.  Thankfully, there were three police vans shuttling people from their cars to the building.  It was my first time in a police van. Painting on tin..... and on some gourds.   I loved the blue chicken gourd. Jerry Brown demonstrating his art. Master Folk Artist Charlie Lucas holding one of his tin sculptures. We go to a lot of art festivals.  Because I don't want to run out of room or money,  I have to limit myself to one item to bring home with me. This is what I bought at this festival. It was made by Scott McQueen of Northport, Alabama.  I loved everything in his booth, but this one called my name.  It was a hard decision, but I'm happy this is living in my house now.

Strange Fowl

We never know when we leave the house what we might see before we get home.  Around here, it can be anything from a coyote to rusty water tanks to a mansion on a hill.  We just need to keep the camera handy for whatever is waiting around the curve or over the next hill.  Here are some examples of very odd fowl that we have spotted while driving down the road, minding our own business. This is an excellent weekend for grabbing your camera and seeing what you can find!
